Shillong, October 22: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to immediately fulfil the state government’s year-old assurance to take up recruitment-related concerns at NEIGRIHMS with the Central Government, stating that prolonged inaction has undermined public trust.

In a reminder letter submitted on Thursday, the KSU said its decision to temporarily suspend its indefinite sit-in demonstration at NEIGRIHMS on May 5, 2025, was based on assurances given by the state government. However, the commitments remain unfulfilled.

The union recalled that it had launched the sit-in demonstration on May 1, 2025, to protest recruitment practices, demand greater opportunities for indigenous candidates and ensure fair employment opportunities for the people of Meghalaya.

Its key demands include a review of the 20:80 male-female ratio in nursing recruitment, reconsideration of reservation provisions for indigenous communities, and the conduct of recruitment examinations directly by NEIGRIHMS, among other related issues.

The agitation was temporarily suspended following the intervention of a delegation led by former Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh.

According to the KSU, the state government had assured it that a meeting would be arranged with the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare to raise the concerns at the national level.

The union said it had reiterated the assurance during meetings with the state government on August 26 and with the Chief Secretary on September 8, 2026. However, the promised meeting has yet to take place.
