Shillong, Oct 17: Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma has officially recognised the “merger” of the eight MLAs of the United Democratic Party (UDP) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The MLAs of the UDP who recently defected to the BJP included Lahkmen Rymbui, Kyrmen Shylla, Mayralborn Syiem, Balajied Kupar Synrem, Pius Marweiñ, Mathew Beyondstar Kurbah, Olan Singh Suin, and Synshar Kupar Lyngdoh Thabah.
In a bulletin issued by the Assembly Secretariat yesterday, the Speaker informed that he had recognised the merger of the eight MLAs with the BJP under Paragraph 4 of the Constitution of India.

“Consequent upon the above, the strength of the UDP legislature party in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly stands at four and that of the BJP legislature party at ten,” the bulletin said.
It may be mentioned that the UDP had filed its petition to the Speaker recently seeking for disqualification of the eight MLAs as they joined the BJP in violation of the provisions of the Anti Defection Act.
Now that the Speaker had recognised the “merger” of the eight UDP MLAs with the BJP, it remains to be seen if the UDP would approach the High Court to challenge the Speaker’s decision.
