Shillong, Jun 29: In yet another legal reprieve for murder accused Sonam Raghuvanshi, the Meghalaya High Court today upheld the April 2026 order passed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) that granted bail to her.
Sonam was the main accuse in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon trip to Nongriat near Sohra in May 2025. Raja’s body was found from a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong, Sohra on June 2, 2025.
The Meghalaya High Court bench of Justice Wanlura Diengdoh in a judgement passed today rejected the appeal of the State government which challenged the bail granted to Sonam.
It may be mentioned that Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) Dashalene Kharbteng had granted bail to Sonam on April 27, 2026 after finding that every document related to Sonam’s arrest, including the checklist for justification of the arrest and the case dairy extract, had wrongly mentioned Section 403 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which is bailable instead of the stringent Section 103 (1) which deals with grave murder cases.
The court also ruled that the police never informed Sonam of her arrest as per procedure.
Today’s verdict by the High Court has given another relief for Sonam after her release from Shillong jail about two months back.
