Shillong, May 22: Meghalaya’s renowned organic pineapple has received international recognition after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted the state’s GI-tagged pineapples to the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during his recent foreign visit.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for showcasing Meghalaya’s agricultural pride on the global stage and highlighting the unique sweetness and quality of the state’s organic pineapples.
In a social media post, Conrad Sangma stated that Meghalaya’s pineapples have become increasingly popular in Dubai and are being exported directly from local farmers through a collaboration between the Government of Meghalaya and Lulu Group.
According to information shared by the Chief Minister, around two metric tonnes of premium organic Meghalaya pineapples were exported to Dubai on July 11, 2025, and showcased at Lulu Retail outlets, including Lulu Hypermarket and Silicon Central Mall.
The initiative is part of the Meghalaya government’s continued efforts to strengthen the pineapple sector through exports, branding, farmer support initiatives, and events such as the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival, which connects local farmers with larger national and international markets.
Officials stated that the global recognition of Meghalaya’s GI-tagged pineapple is expected to further boost the state’s horticulture sector while creating greater market opportunities for local farmers.
