Shillong, September 25: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Friday organised a public rally demanding the resignation and immediate arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Gyanesh Kumar.
The rally, led by MPCC President Vincent Pala, began from the Congress office at Khyndai Lad and concluded at the parking area opposite the Additional Secretariat, where Congress leaders also burnt an effigy of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Speaking to the media, MPCC President Vincent Pala said the protest was against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, whom he accused of undermining the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
Pala alleged that over the past 10 months, the two Election Commissioners had raised 10 objections, but CEC Gyanesh Kumar had allegedly ignored them and continued to run the affairs of the Election Commission without proper consultation.

“The CEC, Gyanesh Kumar, is running the Election Commission with the support of the BJP after amendments were brought into the Act. This shows that the BJP is playing with the rights of the people when it comes to choosing their representatives,” Pala said.
Pala further claimed that in several states, the Congress and other political parties should have won the elections. He also alleged that in West Bengal, the names of many voters had been removed from the electoral roll.

He alleged that people have now realised that names were being removed or changes made to the electoral rolls by the Election Commission on the directions of the BJP.
“We demand that CEC Gyanesh Kumar resign immediately. After his resignation, the Central Government should appoint a commission to investigate the allegations against him. He should be arrested immediately so that the people can regain their confidence in the Election Commission of India,” he said.
