Paul, Renik, Nujor To Meet Meghalaya Speaker On Monday, May Join NPP

Shillong, Oct 18: It looks like the UDP may be reduced to just one MLA in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Reports indicate that three more UDP legislators would jump ship, this time to the NPP.

Paul Lyngdoh (West Shillong), Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar (Mawkyrwat) and Nujorki Sungoh (Mowkaïaw) will meet Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma tomorrow at 4 PM to submit their papers for joining the NPP.

Sungoh, the son of veteran UDP leader and former minister late Mihsalan Suchiang, is currently in Kolkata. He will reach Shillong tomorrow.

The date for the three MLAs joining the NPP is not yet clear but it is likely to happen after they met the Speaker tomorrow. NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is now in New Delhi.

If the three UDP MLAs switched over to the NPP, the ruling party headed by Sangma would see its strength rises to 36.

On October 16, the Meghalaya Assembly Speaker has approved the “merger” of eight UDP MLAs to the BJP.

The eight MLAs included Lahkmen Rymbui (Amlarem), Kyrmen Shylla (Khliehriat), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Balajied Kupar Synrem (Shella), Pius Marweiñ (Ranikor), Mathew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang), Olan Singh Suin (Mawsynram) and Synshar Kupar Lyngdoh Thabah (Sohïong).

If three more MLAs from the UDP abandoned the party, the regional party which won twelve MLAs in the 2023 Assembly elections would be reduced to just one MLA in the form of party president Metbah Lyngdoh (Mairang).
