PGI Ranking: Rymbui Happy With Meghalaya’s Entry In Akanshi-1 Grade

Shillong, Jul 8: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that Meghalaya has performed better in the education sector that resulted in the State jumping to the Akanshi-1 Grade from the previous Akanshi-3 in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2025-26.

“Now we have been placed in Akanshi-1. We are determined to reach In the next PGI we hope to reach the Prachesta Grade,” Rymbui told a press conference in Shillong today.

Although, Rymbui was happy with the improved ranking including the jump in overall score from 448 in PGI 2024-25 to 525.7 in PGI 2025-26, the scores of Meghalaya in six domains of the latest PGI are well below other North East states.

The domains are Learning Outcomes, Access, Infrastructure & Facilities, Equity, Governance Processes, and Teacher Education & Training.

“You may ask about the low scores. Yes I agree but education is a dynamic process. There are problems and challenges and we will try to sort it out in due course of time,” Rymbui said.

He also said that Meghalaya has improved its score in the PGI domain of Governance Processes.

The education minister also dwelt on the various government interventions to improve the education sector in Meghalaya which included pay structure for school teachers, construction and repair of school buildings and availing of funds from various sources to meet the demands.

Though Meghalaya is now placed in Akanshi-1 Grade of PGI 2025-26 along with 12 other states, the State remains in the lower rung. Various states are placed in Prachesta Grade which is higher. Chandigarh was at the top rank securing Uttam-3 Grade.
