Top Court Rejects Meghalaya Govt Plea To Cancel Sonam’s Bail

Shillong, Jul 3: Murder accused Sonam Raghuvanshi got another relief as the Supreme Court today decided not to interfere with her bail.

A Supreme Court bench of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu rejected the plea of the Meghalaya government to cancel the bail.

While expressing reservation with the Meghalaya High Court’s order that upheld the bail granted to Sonam, the Supreme Court bench declined to stay the bail as Sonam had already been released from prison.

However, the Supreme Court has listed for examining the Special Leave Petition filed by the Meghalaya government at the next hearing on July 9.

Sonam, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, is the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi when both of them were on a honeymoon trip to Nongriat near Sohra in May 2025.

Raja’s body was found from a gorge near Wei Sawdong in Sohra on June 2, 2025.

Sonam was arrested in June 2025 from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh and was lodged in Shillong jail for nearly ten months before she was granted bail by the Court of Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), Shillong on June 29, 2026 due to several lapses by the prosecution.
