SHILLONG, NOV 3: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday announced its decision to withdraw support from the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-II) coalition government.

The decision comes just days after UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh resigned from his post as a Cabinet minister.

Speaking to reporters, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), attended by all its leaders, including representatives from Garo Hills.

Chyne said the matter was thoroughly discussed during the meeting, following which the CEC recommended that the party president take a decision on withdrawing support from the MDA government.

He said the prevailing political situation had compelled the UDP to withdraw its support from the MDA-II coalition government.

It may be mentioned that the UDP had been an alliance partner of the NPP since 2018 under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-I) government.
