SHILLONG, NOV 3: Deputy Chief Minister and Meghalaya National People’s Party (NPP) president Prestone Tynsong said the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) decision to withdraw from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-II) was its own choice and not the result of any pressure from the NPP-led government.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said he was unaware of the reasons behind the UDP’s decision to leave the MDA-II government but maintained that the development would not affect the stability of the coalition, as the NPP alone already has 36 MLAs.

“Yes, we are alliance partners, but we are not forcing anyone to stay. If they decide to leave, what can we say?” Tynsong said.

He said the NPP’s position remained to continue its alliance with its partners, not only during the current term but also beyond 2028.

“We want to emphasise that this alliance should continue not just during the present term but even after 2028. That is what we want,” he said.
