Recruitment Lapse Nehuta Blames Shukla Accuses Umdor Of Misleading

Shillong, May 10: Teachers of North Eastern Hill University blamed Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla for the lapse in recruitment of 154 posts in the university.

NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) in a statement issued today also slammed Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Sumarbin Umdor for “misleading” VPP youth wing members when they met him to discuss the matter.

Prof. Umdor had told the VPP youth wing delegation that NEHU had advertised 14 Group-B posts and 140 Group-C posts on November 3, 2023 but the advertisement lapsed on November 2, 2024 as the recruitment process could not be completed due to the students’ unrest in the university.

Reacting to this, NEHUTA said, “It was factually incorrect for the Pro Vice Chancellor (Umdor) to state that the recruitment process could not be completed and got lapsed due to disruption of the functioning of the university by internal unrest.”

NEHUTA also stated that the recruitment lapsed not because of the students’ agitation but due to frequent absence of Prof. Shukla at that time and his “complete detachment from NEHU affairs during his entire tenure”.

“Between the last date i.e., December 12, 2023 and November 2, 2024, Prof. Shukla did nothing to fill the posts and now Prof. Umdor is trying to mislead the public. Prof. Umdor is only trying to shield the total failure of the Vice Chancellor in completing the recruitment process for the third time,” the NEHUTA said.

It also alleged irregularities in the advertisement of January 22, 2024 for recruitment to 11 Group-A posts and said that the recruitment process was “completed in a hurry” because of Prof. Shukla’s “keen interest in it”.

NEHUTA also alleged that Amit Gupta who was appointed as Deputy Registrar of NEHU served for a month and went absent for the last 540 days without taking leave but is still drawing full salary.

“Not a single show-cause letter has been issued to him in violation of Government of India – CCS (Leave) Rules, 1972 and CCS (CCA) RulesĀ  1965,” the NEHUTA said.

It also alleged that Prof. Shukla did not appoint a Controller of Examinations and also did not conduct interviews for Assistant Registrar posts.

Further, the teachers’ body alleged that Prof. Shukla appointed one Rohit Prasad as a Technical Officer, a post that was self-created and not as per the UGC Model Cadre Recruitment Rules.

NEHUTA asked Prof. Umdor to “have the guts” to call a spade a spade and stop “misleading” the people about the mess in the university.

It also stated that the VPP youth wing was misled by Prof. Umdor.

“They could have done their homework properly before approaching the university authority,” it added.
