Khliehriat, May 16: Residents of Daistong village in East Jaiñtia Hills District led by social worker Reachingson Siangshai yesterday met the Deputy Commissioner of the district to lodge their opposition to the proposed limestone mining project by Shree Cement Limited at Lum Syrman.
The villagers also told the DC that they were opposed to the public hearing on the mining project scheduled to be held on May 22.
According to them, Lum Syrman is a source of drinking water for the village besides being a place rich in flora and fauna. They also said that several farmers of Nongkhlieh Elaka have farmlands at Lum Syrman.
“If limestone mining is allowed at Lum Syrman, there will be severe negative impact on drinking water, the environment and the livelihood of local people,” they said.
Urging the DC to cancel the proposed public hearing on the mining project, the villagers said that they have informed the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of their strong opposition to the project and the proposed public hearing.
