Shillong, Jul 8: The Meghalaya cabinet today approved the proposal for allotment of 50 acres of land at Mawkhanu in New Shillong to St. Xavier’s University for setting up of its campus.
Briefing media persons about the cabinet decision, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the State government had received a formal request for land from the management of St. Xavier’s University.

According to him, the university authorities have sought for 100 acres of land from the State government for the proposed university campus.
“After detailed discussion in the cabinet, we decided to give 50 acres of land to St. Xavier’s University in Mawkhanu at the rate of about Rs 1 lakh per hectare, which is a very concessional rate,” Sangma added.
Stating that the decision was to boost the State’s education sector, Sangma said, “By having St. Xavier’s University which us a brand known all over the country and the world, we are very positive that it will have a huge impact, especially in higher and technical education.”
