Shillong, July 21: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Tuesday demanded that the President of the Meghalaya BJP Youth Wing publicly apologise for his alleged remarks advocating that students protesting at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, should be shot. The youth wing also urged the BJP to take strict disciplinary action against him.
Addressing the media, MPYC General Secretary Derrick Jyrwa said the alleged statement calling for protesters to be shot was completely unacceptable, particularly because the Meghalaya BJP Youth Wing president is a lawyer.
Jyrwa said the entire country is aware of why students have been protesting in New Delhi and of the force allegedly used by police to disperse and injure the demonstrators.
He said students from across India had gathered in Delhi to protest the alleged NEET examination paper leak and to demand comprehensive reforms in the country’s education system.

“It is deeply shameful that the President of the Meghalaya BJP Youth Wing could make such a statement calling for protesting students to be shot. We demand that he apologise immediately, and we also call upon the BJP to take stringent disciplinary action against him,” Jyrwa said.
He further stated that the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress would hold a meeting to discuss the alleged remarks made by the Meghalaya BJP Youth Wing president and would soon announce the course of action it intends to take.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Banphira Basaiawmoit said the alleged remarks reflected the culture and attitude of the BJP as a political party.
