Shillong, September 2: Meghalaya Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed that the State Government has asked Advocate General (AG) Amit Kumar to refrain from attending office for one week, while the Government has sought one week’s time from the advocates to examine their demands.
The decision was taken during a meeting with the leaders of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association (HCMBA) and the Shillong Bar Association (SBA), convened by State Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in the presence of officials from the Law Department.
Speaking to the media, Lahkmen Rymbui said that on September 1, he held a meeting with the leaders of the High Court Meghalaya Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association, during which they highlighted their difficulties and demands, particularly their demand for the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar.
Rymbui said that during the meeting, the Government made it clear to the advocates that any decision regarding the demand for the removal of the Advocate General would have to be discussed in a meeting of the State Cabinet, as the Advocate General is an appointment made in accordance with the Constitution of India.

“Therefore, we need to take up and discuss this matter in a meeting of the State Cabinet,” Lahkmen Rymbui said.
The Law Minister said that regarding the other demands, as the Minister in charge of the Law Department, he has the authority to take necessary action and had already assured the advocates on September 1 that he would do what was required.
“Today, I am very happy that the discussion, in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, was fruitful. He appealed to the advocates to cooperate with the Government in resolving their difficulties and also assured them that another round of discussions would be held after one week,” he said.

The Minister said that the Government had appealed to the advocates to withdraw their agitation, but they informed the Government that they would first place what was discussed during the meeting before their fellow members and take a decision thereafter.
