A dramatic incident triggered panic among residents in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district after a young man climbed a mobile communication tower and allegedly demanded a packet of ganja before refusing to come down for hours.
The youth, identified as Hanumanthu, reportedly climbed to a considerable height on the tower and began shouting loudly, drawing the attention of people in the area. As news of the incident spread, a large crowd gathered nearby amid fears that he might attempt to jump.
Eyewitnesses said the man repeatedly appealed to police and locals in Telugu, pleading for a packet of ganja while remaining seated dangerously high on the structure.
Several videos of the incident have since surfaced on social media, showing the youth perched precariously atop the tower as authorities attempted to calm him down.
Police personnel and emergency responders rushed to the spot and launched rescue efforts, engaging the man in lengthy counselling and negotiations to ensure his safe return.
After several hours of persuasion, officials successfully brought him down from the tower without any injuries. He was later taken to a nearby government hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Authorities suspect the youth may have been suffering from emotional distress and could also have been influenced by substance addiction. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
