Conrad calls for urgent steps to halt Manipur unrest

Shillong, May 14: With Manipur descending into another communal conflict, this time between Nagas and Kukis, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today called for urgent measures to stop the unrest in Manipur.

Sangma’s party, the NPP, has seven MLAs in Manipur and is part of the ruling alliance led by the BJP.

“Manipur has been suffering for a very long time and if we do not have peace, we will not be able to move towards bringing back normalcy in the state,” Sangma said.

“We urge the state government as well as the people of Manipur to ensure that violence is stopped and we must continue to work together as a society towards bringing back peace,” he added.

Condemning the recent killing of three pastors of the Kuki Baptist Church, Sangma said, “The way the church leaders were attack and the loss of lives is something that we highly condemn as a party.  Any kind of violence is unacceptable.”

Manipur has been afflicted by ethnic violence since May 2023 between Meiteis and Kukis. Although the tension has subsided, the latest break out of conflict between Kukis and Nagas has added another problem to the state.
