Shillong, Jun 12: Five Bangladeshi nationals were nabbed while three others managed to escape during vehicle checking by police in West Garo Hills yesterday.
According to police, vehicle checking was conducted at a checkpoint in Upper Damalgre by police personnel of Rongram Police Station.
A Bolero vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-MA-9584 was stopped at the checkpoint. The vehicle was carrying eight passengers at the time.
Due to strong suspicion of the identity of the passengers, police asked them to produce documents to prove their identity. Fearing being apprehended, three of the eight passengers fled from the spot.The remaining five passengers could not produce any identity documents. Police immediately placed them under arrest. Police also found Bangladesh SIM cards on the mobile phones of the arrested Bangladeshis.
During interrogation, it was confirmed that the five persons were residents of Soramkudi village under Godagiri Police Station of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh. They have also been identified as Sohail Rana, Chobi Ali, Tashigul Islam, Ziyadur Sheikh and Mohammad Nabi.Police have registered a case against them under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2005.
Efforts are now on to trace the three Bangladeshis who escaped from the scene. Police have alerted local headmen, police stations across West Garo Hills and neighbouring districts.
