GTF stands firm to oppose on government’s move to lease Lumpongdeng Island to IHCL under the guise of development and tourism.

Shillong, March 31: As per press communiqué, Green-Tech Foundation, Meghalaya-India had today visited “Lumpongdeng Island” to bring the attention of the general public on the actual ground and location where the State Government of Meghalaya through the Tourism Department has handed over a score of land measuring about 66 acres approximately to IHCL (Tata Group) which includes an ecologically fragile vista i.e., Lumpongdeng Island situated at the core of Umiam Lake reservoir.

The Foundation in its visit to Lumpongdeng Island has made it yet again very clear that the State Government must not compromise the island in the name of development and tourist attraction.

Umiam lake and its pristine natural vistas has already garnered tourist attraction for its serene beauty and natural richness, there is no need for any kind of construction, development and modification that will alter this natural aura and beauty of the lake and its vistas.

There also has been information received in the air that the Government has responded to the issue that has been raised by the Foundation however, in its firm and stringent opposition the Foundation makes it clear that it will not allow any corporate entity be it private or public entity to exploit and destroy the pristine natural heritage of Umiam lake with Lumpongdeng island in particular.
