Shree Cement Hearing: Irked By Violent Episode, JSU Moves NGT

Shillong, Aug 18: The Jaiñtia Students’ Union (JSU) today said that it has lodged a complaint with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about the various illegalities committed prior and during the public hearing for the proposed limestone mining project of Shree Cements Limited at Lum Syrman in East Jaiñtia Hills District.

The JSU said that it has also submitted video evidences of the entire episode which included the digging up of the road by supporters of the cement company that resulted in an expectant mother stuck for hours on her way to a local health centre.

The students’ body also said it submitted videos of late night attack on its ambulance and medical team by supporters of Shree Cements Limited and the involvement of the district administration in preventing local villagers from going to the public hearing to express their opinion.

The JSU said it was compelled to approach the NGT as the Meghalaya government chose to keep quiet and refused to intervene despite the cry for help by citizens.
