Pala drop hints that he may contest Lok Sabha by-poll

Shillong, April 28: Meghalaya Congress president Vincent H. Pala has hinted that he may contest the upcoming by-election from Shillong seat since none from the party has come forward for the race.

The Lok Sabha seat from Shillong fell vacant following the death of incumbent Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon on February 19.

Speaking to media persons   today, Pala said that since nobody from the party is willing to contest, a party meeting held recently had passed a resolution proposing his name and the same was sent to the central leadership in New Delhi.

“However, since the meeting passed the resolution without taking the views of all block and district committees of the party, we decided to have another meeting likely after May 10 to take a final call,” he said.

Pala also stated that the party is well organised in Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills region with 36 active block committees while “one or two blocks are yet to be reconstituted”.

According to him, the decision on a candidate is taken by the Congress at the state level and then the matter is communicated to the central level for final approval.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Pala had lost by a massive margin of 3,71,910 votes.

Syngkon of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) who won the election secured 5,71,078 votes.

So far, only the VPP has announced the candidate for the upcoming by-election. Party leader Batskhem Myrboh has been selected as the candidate of the party.
