Shillong, May 28: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has announced the name of senior lawyer Vivanstone G K Kynta as the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
Kynta was declared as the UDP nominee at a large gathering held at the party office in Shillong today.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh while announcing Kynta’s name also urged all party members to work hard and ensure the party’s victory in the by-election.
Eight of the twelve party MLAs were present at the meeting. Also present were MDCs of the party in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
The date of the by-election to the Lok Sabha from Shillong seat is yet to be announced by the Election Commission.
The by-election was neccessitated by the demise of sitting MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon on February 19. As per rules, the by-election to fill the vacancy should be held within six months.
With the UDP deciding to field Kynta for the by-poll, the number of candidates in the race has now gone up to three.
Earlier, the VPP has announced its spokesperson Dr. Batskhem Myrboh as its candidate while NPP has nominated Dr. D Rockyer L. Nonglait.
The Congress is likely to name former MP Vincent H. Pala as its contender for the by-poll.
