Shillong, Jun 9: In a major step towards promoting sustainable urban mobility and reducing carbon emissions, five electric buses were launched for operation in Shillong city.

The electric buses were launched as part of the first phase of the initiative under PM eBus Sewa Scheme. Four major routes have been identified for these electric buses.

The five electric buses were flagged off by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma at a programe held at Taraghar – State Guest House in Shillong today in the presence of Chief Secretary Shakil Ahmed, Commissioner & Secretary (Urban Affairs) Vijay Kumar, senior officials, representatives of implementing agencies, and other stakeholders.

The newly launche buses are fully air-conditioned, zero emission, and capable of covering around 180 to 200 kilometres on a single charge.

Each bus can accomodate up to 25 passengers in addition to the driver and feature a comfortable 2X2 seating layout with overhead storage facilities.

Designed to be inclusive and commuter-friendly, the buses are equipped with designated wheelchair spaces and foldable ramps for the benefit of persons with disabilities. They also feature a modern e-ticketing system. They are also GPS-enabled.

Shillong has been sanctioned a total of 50 electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme.
