Shillong, September 23: Eight MLAs of the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the BJP office in Delhi.
The UDP MLAs were welcomed by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in the presence of MP Sambit Patra, Meghalaya BJP in-charge Anil Antony and other senior BJP leaders.
The eight MLAs who joined the BJP are Education Minister and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui; Mawsynram MLA Olan Singh Suin; Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein; Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem; Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem; Sohiong MLA Synshar Kupar Lyngdoh Thabah; Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla; and Mawphlang MLA Mathew Beyondstar Kurbah.
The UDP had 12 MLAs who won the 2023 Assembly election. The four MLAs who remain with the UDP are party president and Mariang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh, West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh, Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Mookaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh.
