Shillong, Aug 3: Amidst the outrage over the alleged partial conduct of the public hearing for the Shree Cement’s limestone mining project in East Jaiñtia Hills District, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today warned of State-wide agitation if the Meghalaya government failed to address public concerns on the issue and on matters relating to influx and others.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today, the KSU accused the State government of working in favour of Shree Cement Ltd during the July 31 public hearing by preventing opponents from entering the venue.
Slamming the district administration, police and Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) for the “partiality” during the public hearing, the KSU demanded scrapping of the entire proceedings of the hearing and departmental action against the officials of the district administration, police and MSPCB.
According to the KSU, incidents on the preceding night including use of tear gas, road digging at Lad Tongseng, and stone pelting by supporters of Shree Cement had resulted in injuries to people and damage to several vehicles. It also said that calls made to officials of the district administration and police went unanswered.
