Shillong, Jul 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today led a delegation of church leaders from the State to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss on the contentious issues related to the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
The North East India Christian Council was represented by its General Secretary Rev. Dr. Meyu Changkiri, the Presbyterian Church of India was represented by its Moderator Rev. H L Myrsing and Rev S C Diengngan, the Catholic Church (Shillong Archdiocese) was represented by Fr. Teiboklang Kharbani, and the Garo Baptist Church was represented by its Youth Director Durasal R. Marak.
During the meeting, the church leaders apprised Shah of the concerns of Christians in Meghalaya regarding certain provisions of the FCRA inluding the proposed amendments to the law and their impact on the functioning of religious, educational, charitable and social welfare institutions in Meghalaya.
These Christian institutions run a large number of schools, colleges, hospitals and community service programmes that serve people across the State particularly in rural and remote areas.
The Chief Minister highlighted the significant role these institutions play in the social and educational life of Meghalaya and urged the Union Home Minister to take into account the unique circumstances of the State while addressing matters relating to the FCRA.
Sangma sought the consideration of the Central government in ensuring that genuine institutions engaged in public service are able to continue their work without disruption.
