Shillong, Sep 15: Tension returned to Mukroh in West Jaiñtia Hills District after villagers prevented Assam officials from carrying out census operations in the village.
According to reports, yesterday morning, enumerators from the Assam government arrived at Mukroh to collect demographic data from local households.
However, residents obstructed the conduct of the census asserting that Mukroh falls under Meghalaya’s territory and also under the jurisdiction of Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The Assam officials had to leave the village after they were chased out by the villagers.
Recently, a similar situation occured at Langpih in West Khasi Hills District when Meghalaya authorities and local villagers had objected to census activities by Assam officials.
