Sniawbhalang Hints July End As Date For Shifting Them Ïew Mawlong Residents

Shillong, Jul 6: The Meghalaya government is aiming to finalise the relocation of residents of Them Ïew Mawlong, Shillong by the end of this month.

This was informed by Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar to media persons today. He also said that the committee on relocation will have a final meeting soon to take a call on the matter.

“We are planning by the end of the month. We are yet to sit for one more meeting and we will take the exact report on what is there. So maybe we will finally have the exact report,” Dhar said.

According to him, during the last meeting of the committee, there was a suggestion to seek land from the Defence Ministry for relocating the residents.

“We are awaiting the final discussion between the State government officials and the Defence Ministry. Let us hope by the end of the month, I will be able to share something with you with regard to the status of Them Ïew Mawlong,” Dhar said.

The Deputy Chief Minister also informed that the State government has identified two to three sites in Shillong belonging to the Defence Ministry for the relocation purpose. He also mentioned that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh thrice to discuss the issue.

Indicating that the original plan to relocate the residents to the Shillong Municipal Board compound at Bivar Road may be abandoned, Dhar said, “Now we have another option with the Defence Ministry’s land. If Plan A is not working, we will go with Plan B.”
