Shillong, Jul 6: As many as 1607 government lower primary schools have been taken up for repair and renovation across Meghalaya under Mission Education.
According to an official statement issued today, 1391 LP schools have been fully renovated while work on the remaining 216 schools is in progress.
The statement also said that Mission Education covers all government schools right from primary level to higher secondary level. It also said that the State government has committed close to Rs 1000 crore for repair, renovation, upgradation, and construction of new school buildings in all districts of Meghalaya.
Alongside the repair and renovation of LP schools, the government has built new and upgraded school buildings. 191 LP schools and seven upper primary (UP) schools were completed under the first phase, 100 LP schools under the second phase, and 117 under the third phase.

Under the fourth phase, over 180 new LP and secondary school buildings are currently under tendering process to replace older structures.
“In all, more than 2000 LP and UP school works have been taken up under Mission Education,” the statement added.
It informed that renovation works have restored roofs, walls, flooring, doors, windows and finishing across LP and UP schools while newly built and upgraded schools are being provided with additional classrooms, furniture, libraries and proper sanitation facilities.
“Meghalaya has close to 15,000 elementary schools and the government has been clear that a transformation of this scale is being delivered in stages rather than all at once,” the statement said.
