Shillong, Jul 28: Officials of the Meghalaya Urban Affairs Department in collaboration with the district administration of East Khasi Hills have relocated all street vendors earlier operating in Jail Road and Polo area of Shillong.
Street vendors earlier operating along the stretch from OB Shopping Mall to Jail Road petrol pump have been relocated to the designated vending zone at the parking lot opposite State Bank of India. The site has a capacity of 79 stalls, of which nine have been occupied. 22 other vendors from Secretariat Hill and IGP Junction will also be shifted to the parking lot.
Street vendors earlier operating in Polo have been relocated to the vending zone near Matri Mandir, Polo. The site has a capacity of 132 stalls, of which 70 have been occupied.

A total of 65 Certificates of Vending (COVs) have been issued for the vending zone at the parking lot near SBI. Further, 106 COVs have been issued for the vending zone near Matri Mandir.
Vendors having valid COV will receive a relocation assistance package of Rs 20,000 comprising an upfront payment of Rs 10,000 and a monthly allowance of Rs 2000 for the subsequent five months..
The relocation of street vendors in Laitumkhrah will begin on August 17.
The Urban Affairs Department said that relocation of street vendors in the entire city is expected to be completed by September this year. It also said that no street vendor would be allowed to operate in areas notified as ‘No Vending Zone’.
