Two Drug Traffickers Arrested, Heroin Seized in ANTF Operation at Lumsurvey

Shillong, June 22: The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Meghalaya, has arrested two suspected drug traffickers and seized a significant quantity of suspected heroin during an ambush operation conducted in the Lumsurvey area of Shillong on Sunday.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, ANTF Meghalaya, the operation was launched based on credible intelligence inputs and successfully disrupted a drug deal in the area.

During the operation, officials apprehended two individuals and recovered the following items during a search conducted under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act:

One plastic soap box containing suspected heroin weighing approximately 16.1 grams

47 colourful vials containing suspected heroin

One mobile phone

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  1. Sabina Begum (21), wife of Omega Ali, a resident of Lumsurvey, Shillong, and originally from Samdhara, Sonitpur district, Assam.
  2. Viru Singh (40), son of Late Taru Singh, a resident of Punjabi Line, Bara Bazar, Shillong.

Police have registered a case under the NDPS Act at Sadar Police Station, Shillong. Investigators suspect that the accused are part of a larger organised drug trafficking network operating in the city.

The ANTF stated that further investigations are underway to establish both the forward and backward linkages of the network and identify other individuals involved in the illegal trade.

Officials also revealed that this is the third NDPS-related case registered in the Lumsurvey area in 2026. So far this year, seven persons have been arrested in connection with contraband trafficking cases from the locality, with most of the accused reportedly having links to Assam.

The ANTF noted that a substantial quantity of heroin, along with numerous empty vials and syringes, has been recovered in these cases. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict surveillance in Lumsurvey and taking firm action against those involved in drug trafficking and other narcotics-related offences.

The operation forms part of Meghalaya Police’s ongoing efforts to curb the spread of narcotics and dismantle organised drug networks operating in the state.
