CPGSAS, Umiam Organized Khet Bachao Abhiyan and Virtually Releases 23rd Installment of PM-KISAN

Shillong, June 22: The College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (CPGSAS), CAU(Imphal) Umiam, organized the Khet Bachao Abhiyan (2:45 PM to 4:00 PM) and virtually participated in the live telecast of the PM-KISAN Utsav Diwas programme) on 20th June, 2026 for the release of the 23rd installment of PM-KISAN. The installment was released by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi Ji, during a national programme held at Tarakeswar, Hooghly, West Bengal.

The programme was organized under the guidance of Prof. Dwipendra Thakuria, Dean, CPGSAS, with the objective of creating awareness among farmers about the importance of protecting agricultural land, adopting sustainable farming practices, and ensuring long-term agricultural productivity and food security. The event also enabled farmers, students, faculty members and staff to witness the live telecast of the PM-KISAN installment release and gain awareness about various government initiatives for farmers’ welfare.

The programme was graced by several distinguished guests, including Mr. Duruth Majaw, State President, Kisan Morcha, Meghalaya; Smt. M. Maring, President, Ri-Lajong FPO, Ri-Bhoi; Mr. Donlang Nongbri, General Secretary, Kisan Morcha, Meghalaya; Mr. Prahalad Toor, Vice-President, Ri-Lajong FPO, Ri-Bhoi; Mrs. Plenty Makri, Vice-President, Kisan Morcha, Meghalaya; Mrs. Darapbiang Muleh, Entrepreneur and President, Kyntu Kanduli Organic Millet Group, West Jaintia Hills; Mr. Karbius Lyngdoh, Headman, Umktieh Mawkhim Village; and Mr. Khrawbok Marwein, Secretary, Umktieh Mawkhim Village. The dignitaries emphasized the importance of safeguarding agricultural land and promoting sustainable farming practices to enhance farmers’ livelihoods and ensure food security.

As part of the event, a Farmer Scientist Interaction Programme on “Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026” was conducted to highlight the significance of sustainable agriculture, conservation of agricultural land and strengthening farmer awareness. During the Farmer Scientist Interaction Programme, Prof. Dwipendra Thakuria, Dean, CPGSAS, emphasized the importance of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan in protecting agricultural lands and preserving indigenous farming practices.

He highlighted that the integration of scientific agronomic practices with traditional knowledge can enhance productivity while reducing dependence on chemical inputs. He also encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices and explained the harmful effects of excessive chemical fertilizer use on human health, livestock, soil fertility, and the environment. Distinguished faculty, guests, progressive farmers, and representatives of farmer organizations shared their experiences and perspectives during the programme.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 212 participants, including farmers, faculty members, students, and staff of CPGSAS, Umiam. The programme served as an important platform for disseminating information on farmer-centric schemes and reinforcing the collective commitment towards sustainable agricultural development and agricultural land conservation.
