Shillong, July 11: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait on Saturday said that he decided to contest the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency by-election not for any personal benefit from the government, but with the sole intention of serving the people of Meghalaya.
Addressing an election campaign meeting at Pariong, Dr. Nonglait said, “I decided to contest this MP by-election not because I expect anything from the government, but because I want to contribute towards the welfare and development of the people of the state.”
He further revealed that although the NPP had offered him the party ticket to contest the by-election, he took nearly two weeks to deliberate before accepting the proposal. He said that after careful thought, he agreed to contest not for his own personal interests but to work for the well-being and progress of the people of Meghalaya.
Appealing for support from the people of Pariong, Dr. Nonglait said that if they wanted development to reach the area, they should elect a representative from their own region so that developmental projects could flow to Pariong.

He also reiterated his commitment to securing the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. He said this aspiration could only be achieved if the people elected him to Parliament, where he would have the opportunity to raise the issue and pursue other matters concerning the welfare and rights of the Khasi community.
Highlighting his long association with Pariong, Dr. Nonglait noted that the village is one of the prominent areas in West Khasi Hills and was the first village in the district to have a secondary school. Besides the establishment of the school, he said he had played a key role in securing a drinking water supply scheme for Pariong as well as the establishment of the C&RD Block at Mawthadraishan.

He further stated that the NPP-led government has implemented numerous developmental projects across the districts of Meghalaya, particularly in the sectors of roads, bridges, drinking water supply, healthcare and other public infrastructure. However, he acknowledged that much more development is still needed and assured the people that, if elected as the Member of Parliament from Shillong, he would take responsibility for raising the concerns of the people in Parliament and work to bring more developmental initiatives and meaningful change to the state.
