Shillong, Sep 23: Of the eight UDP MLAs from Meghalaya who joined the BJP today, two of them have changed party affiliations thrice.
Cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui who led the defection to the BJP was elected on Congress ticket in the 2008 Assembly election from the erstwhile War Jaiñtia Constituency.
Rymbui resigned from the Congress in 2018 and joined the UDP and was elected twice on UDP ticket from Amlarem Constituency in 2018 and 2023.
Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem was first elected on Congress ticket in 2018. He resigned from the Congress to join the UDP and was reelected from Nongpoh Constituency in the 2023 Assembly election.
Interestingly, another MLA who joined the BJP today is the son of a former president of UDP, late Dr. Donkupar Roy.

Balajied Kupar Synrem, the eldest son of late Dr. Roy was elected from Shella Constituency in the by-election held on October 24, 2019 following the sudden demise of his father. He was reelected as MLA in the 2023 Assembly poll.
Former minister Kyrmen Shylla who also joined the BJP was elected twice (2018 and 2023) from Khliehriat Constituency on UDP ticket.

Four other UDP MLAs who defected to the BJP today are first time legislators. They are Pius Marweiñ (Ranikor), Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang), Ollan Sing Suin (Mawsynram) and Synshar Thabah (Sohïong).
