Shillong, May 13: After two years that heavy vehicles were not allowed to cross through Umïam dam bridge for the structural safety of the dam, now buses and trucks can enter Shillong from Ri-Bhoi District and vice versa through a newly constructed by-pass.
The by-pass that passes through Ïew Dam and culminates at the main road near the Army water pump was constructed at the cost of Rs 23 crore.
The project was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister incharge PWD, Prestone Tynsong in the presence of Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare and other senior government officials.
Tynsong while expressing satisfaction with the completion of the by-pass said that the project has eased the movement of heavy vehicles to Shillong including passenger buses and goods laden trucks.

However, he mentioned that here will be restrictions on the size of vehicles plying on the new road.
The restrictions have been notified by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills yesterday.
As per the order issued, articulated trucks will not be allowed to ply on the Umïam by-pass.
Only rigid trucks having upto three axles with two tyres in the front axle and eight tyres in two-tandem axle in the back will be allowed on this new road.
Night buses can move on the by-pass between 9 PM to 7 AM but they have to park only at the Inter-State Bus Terminal at Mawïong.
