Shillong, Mar 13: The State Public Works Department (PWD) has entrusted the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to prepare the detailed project report for construction of a four-lane road from Lad Umroi near Umïam to Shillong city.
This was informed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong during inauguration of the Umïam by-pass today.
According to Tynsong, having a four-lane road would ease movement of all types of vehicles from Umïam to Shillong besides reducing traffic jam.
“We had two meetings with officials of NHIDCL to discuss this four-lane proposal. If there is no possibility for four-lane road, we may go for a standard size double-lane road,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said that another meeting would be held with NHIDCL in Delhi next week to finalise the proposal.
Tynsong also said that the State government has put a lot of emphasis on road infrastructure in the State and during 2025-2026, an amount of Rs 2400 crore has been budgeted for the road sector.
“Out of Rs 2400 crore, an amount of Rs 2000 crore is from State fund, Rs 261 crore from Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and Rs 130 crore from Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) not to mention other fundings under External Aided Projects,” he added.
