Umlew River Turns Muddy Due to Road Construction by Dhar Company; Villages and Committee Express Concern

Nongpoh, June 11: Leaders of nine villages under the Nongtraw area in Ri Bhoi District, under the banner of the Wah Umlew Protection Committee, have expressed serious concern over the pollution of the Umlew River, alleging that road construction work by Dhar Construction Company is causing severe environmental damage.

Speaking to reporters, Committee Secretary Pynskhemlang Sohtun said the river has turned muddy and brown due to ongoing road construction from Nongkohlew to NEIGRIHMS. He stated that the committee had submitted a memorandum to the company on May 20, urging it to adopt measures to prevent pollution, but no action has been taken so far.

Sohtun said the discoloration has affected aquatic life and villagers who depend on the river for daily household needs. He clarified that the committee is not against development projects but is demanding adequate safeguards to protect the river.

The committee has urged the government and the Company to intervene immediately, warning that it may be forced to consider further action if the authorities and the company fail to address the issue.
