Shillong, Jul 31: The district administration of East Jaiñtia Hills has denied media reports that a pregnant woman delivered her baby inside a car due to damage caused to the road by supporters of Shree Cement.
In a statement issued today, East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Shivansh Awasthi clarified that the pregnant woman identified as Riniwanki Sukhlaiñ from Shnongrim village gave birth to the baby at Sutnga Community Health Centre (CHC) under the care and supervision of doctors.
Awasthi informed that the woman had labour contraction at around 4:30 AM and the local Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) was immediately informed about the case.

“The ANM on being informed visited the woman at her house. After observing her condition, the ANM recommended for shifting the woman to Sutnga CHC. They left the house at around 8:30 AM for the CHC by a car hired under the CM – Safe Motherhood Scheme (CM-SMS). On the way, they were stuck for about 45 minutes due to the damage caused to the road. Later, the headman of Shnongrim informed the headman of Lelad about the situation faced by the pregnant mother. At around 9:15 AM the mother left for Sutnga CHC by another car arranged the headman of Lelad under CM-SMS,” Awasthi said.

He also informed that the mother reached Sutnga CHC at 10:15 AM and shortly later gave birth to her baby who weighed 2.96 kilos.
“Both the mother and the baby are in healthy condition and under close observation by the doctors and nurses of Sutnga CHC,” Awasthi said.
