Shillong, July 13: A rare sighting of a Barn Owl (Tyto alba) at the Lumjingshai Complex in Shillong has drawn attention to the rich wildlife that continues to thrive within urban landscapes in Meghalaya.
The owl was photographed perched quietly among dense foliage, its natural camouflage blending seamlessly with the surrounding leaves. The sighting was shared on social media by wildlife enthusiast Wallow in the Wild (@btsgm14), who described the bird’s distinctive heart-shaped face, dark eyes and golden-brown plumage as a striking example of the species’ natural beauty.
The post noted that Barn Owls are widely distributed across India, including the hill regions of Meghalaya, and are primarily nocturnal predators that play an important ecological role by feeding on rodents.
The sighting serves as a reminder of the biodiversity that exists even within urban settings and underscores the importance of conserving green spaces that provide habitat for native wildlife.
