Meghalaya Is Now Example Of Economic Growth In NE: Sonowal

Shillong, Jun 15: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal today said that Meghalaya has emerged as a leading example of economic growth in the North East.

In his address at the North East India Infrastructural Summit and Exhibition 2026 held at Lariti Performing Arts Centre, New Shillong, Sonowal said that Meghalaya has shown the way of how improved connectivity, tourism, digital infrastructure and governance reforms can accelerate economic growth in the North East.

“Meghalaya has leveraged its natural advantages, entrepreneurial ecosystem, and strategic location to attract investments across sectors such as tourism, information technology, logistics, agriculture and renewal energy,” Sonowal said.

He also said that Meghalaya’s growing reputation as a destination  for business, innovation and sustainable development reflects the broader transformation underway across the region.

Sonowal also pointed to Meghalaya’s progress in Ease of Doing Business and governance reforms, noting that the State secured the third rank nationally in ‘Compliance Reduction and Deregulation 1.0’ after successfully completing all 23 priority reform areas.

The Union minister said that flagship events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival, investment in digital and transport infrastructure, and the proactive leadership of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have strengthen Meghalaya’s position as a key contributor to the North East growth story.
