Shillong Sep 17: With the southwest monsoon of 2026 about to end, Meghalaya is poised to face drought like conditions next year due to the worst rainfall deficit this year.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meghalaya received 59 per cent less rainfall during this year’s monsoon.
The IMD data showed that between June 1 and September 16, Meghalaya received only 1015.4 mm of rainfall against a normal 2482 mm during the period.

Even the two rainiest places on earth, Mawsynram and Sohra saw less rainfall this monsoon with 53 per cent rainfall deficit.
The rainfall deficit is going to hit hard on agriculture and cause an economic crisis on farmers who account for 77 per cent of the State’s population.
