Rs 175 Crore Project Launched To Boost Lakadong Turmeric Production in Jaiñtia Hills

Shillong, Jul 21: In a major boost to the production of Meghalaya’s famous Lakadong turmeric, a special project was launched today to benefit farmers involved in production of the turmeric.

The project titled Meghalaya Lakadong Turmeric Integrated Development Mission was launched today by Union DONER Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Meghalaya Agriculture Minister Timothy D. Shira and others at Sanchar Bhavan, New Delhi.

The Rs 175.45 crore project is jointly funded by the DONER Ministry/North Eastern Council, Union Agriculture Ministry and the Meghalaya government.

The project is an integrated value chain development programme aimed at positioning Meghalaya as the national and global hub for premium, organic, GI-certified Lakadong turmeric.

With a duration of five years (2026-2030), the mission will cover West Jaiñtia Hills and East Jaiñtia Hills with a target of over 17,500 beneficiaries with 99 per cent women participation in processing and institutional activities.

The targeted production is 49,400 tons of Lakadong turmeric by 2030 with the key objectives of transforming Lakadong into a globally competitive value added and export-oriented product.
