Shillong Homestay Vandalism: High Court Quashes FIR Against Six Students From Uttar Pradesh

Shillong, Sep 8: The Meghalaya High Court has quashed the FIR registered against six students from Uttar Pradesh accused of vandalising a homestay in Shillong.

The FIR was registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station on July 11 after the owner of Oakwood, a homestay located at Risa Colony, lodged a complaint against the six students for vandalising the property and threatening the workers.

The High Court bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere quashed the FIR after the six students paid Rs 2.06 lakh as compensation to the owner of the homestay.

However, the High Court directed two of the students to perform six days of community service.

As part of the community service, the two students will spend three days, beginning September 8, at the Sikh Centre Sri Guru Singh Sabha at Laitumkhrah from 10 AM to 5 PM under the supervision of Dr. Kamaljeet Singh.

They will also have to take part in the cleaning of Umkhrah River and take care of flowers and garbage bins in Shillong under the “Project Clean-Up” of Jiva Cares.

The High Court also directed that a report on the satisfactory completion of the community service be submitted to the public prosecutor concerned and the same will be taken up at the next court hearing to be held on September 15.

The six students – Vikas Singh, Avinash Singh and Akhand Pratap Singh and three minors were arrested by Meghalaya Police from Alipurduar, West Bengal on July 13 after the FIR filed by the homestay owner. However, they were granted bail on the same day by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Alipurduar. The homestay owner later moved the court opposing the bail given to the six accused.

Following intervention of elders and wellwishers of the students, a mutual settlement was reached and the accused agreed to pay compensation to the homestay owner. Following the settlement, the homestay owner gave his consent for quashing of the FIR.
