Shillong, Jul 23: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, is set to be sent back to Shillong jail.
The Supreme Court today cancelled her bail and directed her to surrender within two weeks.
During today’s hearing, the Supreme Court bench of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice P B Varale directed the trial court to complete the trial and examination of witnesses within six months.
The bench also said that if the trial is not concluded within six months, Sonam may apply for bail again from the trial court.

“We are inclined to observe that the continued enlargement on bail of the respondent at this stage might hinder the ongoing trial. In such a matter, we are inclined to set aside the bail order. The respondent is given two weeks to surrender. In the event of the trial not concluding within six months, the respondent can submit an application seeking bail,” the Supreme Court bench said.
The order by the Supreme Court was on the Special Leave Petition filed by the Meghalaya government challenging the June 29 order of the Meghalaya High Court that upheld the bail granted to Sonam by the Court of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial).
Appearing for the Meghalaya government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta contended that the constitutional requirement of furnishing the ground of arrest in writing had been substantially complied with.
Mehta also stated that the only defect was the typographical error in the arrest memo, which referred to Section 403 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) instead of Section 103 which deals with murder.
Senior lawyer Ardhendumauli Prasad appeared for Sonam during the hearing in the Supreme Court.
