Man Arrested In Gujarat For Alleged Cyber Blackmail Linked To Meghalaya Woman’s Suicide

Shillong, June 25:South West Khasi Hills Police have arrested a 22-year-old man from Gujarat in connection with the alleged cyber blackmail of a young woman from Mawkyrwat who died by suicide earlier this year.

The arrest follows an investigation initiated after Balapynhun Nongrum, a resident of Mawkyrwat village, lodged a First Information Report alleging that her sister took her own life on April 19, 2026, after being subjected to sustained blackmail, threats and intimidation by the accused. According to the complaint, the accused had allegedly threatened to circulate the victim’s private photographs and videos on WhatsApp and Instagram.

Based on the complaint, Mawkyrwat Women Police Station registered Case No. 04/2026 under Sections 77, 79, 351(3) and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, read with Sections 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, and launched an investigation.

Police traced the accused to Surat district in Gujarat, where he was arrested on June 23 by a team from the South West Khasi Hills District Police with assistance from Palsana Police Station. The accused has been identified as Sachin Nishad (22), son of Yogendra Nishad, a resident of Bhidoor village in Ambedkar Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh.

Police said the accused is being produced before the competent court following the transit remand granted by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Surat, before being brought to Meghalaya for further legal proceedings.

In a statement, the district police urged victims of online harassment, cyber blackmail, sextortion and threats involving private or intimate content not to suffer in silence or resort to extreme measures, emphasising that such offences are serious crimes and that law enforcement agencies remain committed to taking prompt action against offenders. The police also appealed to members of the public to report such incidents without delay so that timely legal intervention, counselling and support can be provided, reiterating that help is available for those facing cyber abuse or emotional distress.
