Shillong, Jul 7: Meghalaya BJP leader and MLA Alexander L. Hek today said he was the first to take up with the Central government regarding the concerns of churches on the proposed amendments to he Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
Speaking to media persons in Shillong today, Hek said that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with proposals for exemption of church-run institutions from the FCRA.
Hek also said that earlier he had had meetings on this issue with the North East India Christian Council (NEICC) at his office in Golf Links, Shillong and also with leaders of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) in New Delhi.
“I have written to the Government of India seeking consideration. I have requested for exemption,” he said.

Stating that his main demand was for exemption of institutions run by Christian organisations from the ambit of FCRA, Hek also said that he wanted the Central government to have broader consultations with church bodies on the proposed FCRA amendments.
Hek also said that his letter sent to Modi had been acknowledged by the Ministry of Law and Justice with assurances that his proposals “will be examined and considered”.
Stating that he was aware of the meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and representatives of various Christian forums yesterday in Delhi, Hek said he was optimistic of a positive response by the Central government to the points and concerns expressed by Christians on the proposed FCRA amendments.
