Sexual Harassment Case: Naba Rejects James Sangma’s Allegations Of Inaction

Shillong, Jun 29: The internal squabble in the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) continues on the issue of a sexual harassment case involving the State’s Under-23 women cricketers.

Former MCA president Naba Bhattacharjee today denied allegations that he failed to act on the complaint lodged by the women cricketers.

The allegations against Bhattacharjee were made by MCA president James Sangma to the press.

Calling Sangma’s statement “prejudiced and biased”, Bhattacharjee said that he had fully cooperated with the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) and also deposed before the commission when he was summoned on May 26.

“No complaint was placed before me on this incident by any official of the MCA during my tenure,” Bhattacharjee said.

According to him, the complaint by the women cricketers were not brought to his notice by any MCA officials between December 3, 2025 when the complaint was filed, as informed during the MSWC  hearing. He also said that no such complaint was brought to his notice during election of the new office bearers which concluded on December 19, 2025 where the new Apex Council of MCA was elected. He also mentioned that when the old body demitted office on January 13, 2026, the matter was not brought to his notice.

“Had the matter been brought to my notice even in the last hour of my tenure, an emergency Apex Council meeting would have been convened to address this important issue of sexual harassment and I would initiate necessary action in accordance with law and procedure,” Bhattacharjee said.

Stating that he hardly access the MCA mail which is attended to by regular office staff and other officials who regularly attend office, Bhattacharjee questioned the timeline of action after he demitted office.

“The harassed women cricketers approached the MSWC on May 3, 2026. I was not holding any office in MCA from December 19, 2025, the day the election results were declared or since formal handing over on January 13, 2026 till date. What action was initiated between that point of time till May 3, 2026 when the harassed women cricketers approached the MSWC?” Bhattacharjee asked.

It may be mentioned that the MCA has handed a lifetime ban on head coach  Heman Roy and assistant manager Sanjay Mondal for their alleged involvement in the sexual harassment case.

MCA honorary secretary Rayonald Kharkamni was suspended for his alleged failure to handle the complaints lodged twice by the women cricketers in  the first week of December 2025.
