Truckers’ strike against cement company to go ahead

Shillong, April 23: The indefinite strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of truckers and transporters from Jaiñtia Hills region will begin on April 24.

According to the JAC leaders, the strike would go ahead after their meeting with Star Cement failed to make any breakthrough.

A delegation of the JAC comprising of East Jaiñtia Hills Truck Owners’ and Transporters’ Association (EJHTOTA) and Jaiñtia Hills Truck Owners’ Association (JHTOA) today met Star Cement’s management representative Devendra Bansal to discuss on ways to end the deadlock including the demand by the JAC for trucks loading allocation from the star cement.

However, Bansal could not give any clear cut assurance on the demand even though he appealed to the JAC to withdraw the strike first.

The JAC is demanding that Star Cement should give load allocation to 18 local trucks per day instead of the current 3-4 trucks per day which has affected the business of local truckers and transporters.

The strike led to the halt in the movement of trucks exiting or entering Star Cement from both directions of National Highway-6 at Tuber Kmaishnong – Tahkhñiang in East Jaiñtia Hills district.
