Provident Fund Scheme: Education Dept to meet agitating teachers on May 6

Shillong, May 4: The State Education Department has invited representatives of grant-in-aid school and college teachers for a meeting on May 6 to discuss on the Meghalaya Non-Government School and College Centralised Provident Fund Scheme, 2026.

The meeting scheduled at 3 PM will be held at the conference hall of the State Secretariat in Shillong.

Meanwhile, the Education Department today defended the scheme stating it would provide financial security protection to more than 30,000 employees of non-government schools and colleges in the State.

In a statement issued today, the Education Department said that the scheme extends structured provident fund and pension benefits to a wide spectrum of non-government teaching staff including deficit teachers and lecturers, ad-hoc teachers, SSA and RMSA teachers, Hindi and Science grant teachers, pre-primary teachers as well as various categories of non-teaching staff.

“By bringing all such categories under a unified and professionally managed framework, the scheme aims to promote equity, transparency and sustainability,” the department said.

It also said that large number of employees in non-government schools and colleges have responded positively to the scheme and the process of opening Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) has already started in several parts of the State.

Regarding the concerns expressed by certain sections of employees particularly deficit schools and college teachers, the Education Department said that the matter is currently sub judice in the Meghalaya High Court and the government has placed the notified scheme before the court and is awaiting its decision.
