Khliehriat, May 12: An unidentified male body was recovered from a water-filled abandoned coal mine at Mulait Bri-Sumer village in East Jaintia Hills district, police said on Monday. The body was found floating in a semi-submerged condition inside the abandoned mine, prompting a rescue operation involving the SDRF team.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, information regarding the incident was received on May 9 at around 1:50 PM from the Headman of Mulait Bri-Sumer village, who reported that a body was seen floating inside the abandoned mine.
Following the information, a police team from Mooriap Border Outpost (BOP) rushed to the spot for enquiry and verification. Upon arrival, the police found the unidentified body floating in a semi-submerged condition at an estimated depth of around 50 feet from the surface level inside the abandoned coal mine.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescue team was subsequently informed, and with their assistance, the body was retrieved from the mine. After completion of legal formalities, the body was shifted to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Police stated that the body was in a decomposed state and has been kept at the hospital morgue for identification and claim by family members or relatives.
According to the details provided by the police, the deceased is believed to be a male aged between 30 and 40 years, approximately 5 feet tall, with a fair complexion. He was reportedly wearing a blue tracksuit trouser and a blue tracksuit jacket with black stripes on the front side.
The police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the deceased or locate his family members and relatives.
